How Much Does a Pet Insurance Cost?

$ $ Annual Cat Insurance: $350 $ $ $ Annual Dog Insurance: $595

One of the last things we want to think about when having a pet is that something wrong will ever happen to it.

Having insurance can give you the peace of mind that if something happens, you will be able to give your pet all the care it needs without having to spend large amounts of money on veterinary bills.

Let’s review some of the basic facts about pet insurance and how much it costs.

What is Pet Insurance?

Pet insurance helps you cover the veterinary bills that might come up if your pet has an accident or if it suffers an illness.

Veterinary treatments for some diseases and accidents can be particularly expensive, especially if surgery or long-term care are needed.

In these cases, having pet insurance can be of great help.

There is a wide variety of pet insurance providers, with different insurance plans and costs.

Not all animals are covered with insurance -for instance, exotic pets-, so it’s better to check first if your pet can be covered.

What Does Pet Insurance Include?

Besides injuries caused by accidents and certain diseases, most pet insurances also include the death of the pet, the end-of-life services, if your pet is stolen or missing, or if it causes damage to somebody else’s property.

What Does Pet Insurance Exclude?

Most pet insurances don’t cover routine check-ups, preventive treatments, grooming, neutering, or pre-existing conditions, which include long-term diseases or injuries.

There will also be a waiting period when first acquiring pet insurance, that won’t cover any injuries or diseases that occur within days or weeks after getting the insurance.

Does My Pet Need Insurance?

Some pet parents feel safer when having pet insurance because they know that if anything happens, their pets will be protected.

Although the cost of insurance might seem pointless in the first few years of your pet’s life, accidents might still happen, and it could be a great relief to have it once your pet gets older.

It’s recommended to check the specific breed of your pet, their genetic conditions, and what kind of insurance you could get.

How Much Does Pet Insurance Cost?

The total cost of pet insurance will depend on what kind of pet you have, its breed, age, gender, health condition, the city where you live, and the type of coverage you choose.

There are 3 types of pet insurance coverage, accident, accident & illness, and accident, illness, & wellness.

Accident

This insurance plan only covers accidents that your pet might have, excluding any other treatment or procedure that it might need if it has a disease.

This plan tends to be the cheapest of all.

Accident & Illness

This is the most popular plan, which covers accidents and any disease your pet might suffer.

Keep in mind that pet insurances generally won’t cover the total amount of veterinary bills or treatment that your pet might need.

In some cases, it can be from 50% to 90%, although some companies do offer 100% of coverage.

Accident, Illness & Wellness

This is a complete plan and the most expensive one.

It will cover accidents, illnesses, and some of the costs of routine check-ups and preventive treatments.

It’s difficult to determine how much you would be paying in pet insurance without considering all the elements already mentioned, especially those about your pet.

But on average, you can expect to pay for cat insurance around $350 per year, and for dog insurance $595 per year.
